Press release 8: Flooding conditions in Kittilä, Kittilä municipality, Wed 16 May 2018 at 14:00

Flood water levels in Kittilä are starting to go down

Floodwaters in Kittilä have begun to recede. The situation will be monitored over the following week, as rainfall in the coming days may yet affect the water levels.

According to data from the Flood Centre, flooding conditions in Kittilä have stabilised, but any major rainfall over the coming days in the catchment basin of Kittilä floodwaters could cause the water level to rise again. For this reason, the situation continues to be monitored.

The durability of flood levees and potential problems caused by waterlogging will also be monitored further. Pumping of drainage system waters in the health centre area continues. While the floodwaters have receded on Sodankyläntie road, there still is water on the road.

As the situation has stabilised, the municipality's flood information line (tel. 040 676 3000) has been closed for the time being. If necessary, information about municipal services is available from the municipality’s other telephone numbers used in normal times.

The flood management team for Kittilä municipality met on Wednesday, 6 May at 12 noon and received an overview of the situation from the ELY Centre, the Finnish Environment Institute, the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s Flood Centre and the Regional Rescue Services of Lapland.

The flood management team will next meet on Thursday, 17 May at 12 noon and review the situation. No flood bulletin will be published on Thursday unless there is a change in the situation.
