Basic education has the functions of educating and teaching. Its objective is to support a pupil's growth as  a person and a member of the society as well as teach necessary skills. Basic education gives everyone the same qualifications for further studies and it is free of charge. Books and other learning materials, equipment and substances are free of charge.

 

A pupil is also entitled to a free full meal on each school day. With certain preconditions a free transportation is also available. Taking part in education requires student welfare which is also free of charge. A pupil with a handicap or other special need is entitled to free aids that enable him or her to take part in education. There are also assistants and interpreters and other aides available.

 

There are six schools that provide basic education in the municipality. In the village of Kittilä there is one school for high school (classes 7-9) and one school for elementary school (classes 1-6), called Lukkarin koulu. There are elementary schools in Alakylä, Kaukonen, Sirkka and Raattama.
